A few weeks ago, a triumphant President Obama claimed that his stimulus plan had already saved or created 150,000 jobs. There was no proof offered and that is partly due to the fact that “saved” jobs is an unmeasurable statistic. Now, despite that fact that Vice President Biden has claimed that “we know some of this money is going to be wasted” when referring to the stimulus, the President is promising that 600,000 jobs will be created this summer via his stimulus plan. This will come from federal agencies pouring billions of dollars into schools, public works projects and summer youth programs. Common sense informs us that those will be temporary jobs if they result in job growth at all.
This is the key problem with the entire premise behind the Porkulus Bill. Biden has told us that it will lead to more government waste and there is no guarantee that any of the job growth will be long lasting. Those police recruit jobs in Columbus, Ohio that the President had highlighted a couple of months ago as jobs that he had saved are already gone. The city has started making cuts and those were the first to go. The few construction jobs created for several projects are now gone as the projects have been completed.
Not only is the President out of step with that reality, he is ramping up efforts this week in the jobs area with the stimulus plan by promising these 600.000 new jobs even as his own advisors are trying to downplay public expectations about the spending plan lowering unemployment in the near future. The AP is reporting that “many of the stimulus plans that Obama announced Monday already were in the works, including hundreds of maintenance projects at school support staff.” This is similar to the claims that the President made in regards to projects when the Porkulus Bill first passed. Most projects were already being completed and yet the government claimed that these projects were a result of the stimulus., about 1,600 state road and airport improvements, and federal money states budgeted for 135,000 teachers, principals and
The truth is that even if the President is able to create these jobs, they will make little difference in an economy that he has continued to destroy over the past few months. Capitalism has become something to despise and the government has continued to conglomerate its power through the banks and business. Unemployment has continued to rise as a result and America now sits at a 25 year high of 9.4%. Despite passage of the Porkulus Bill which promised to save the economy and jobs, 1.6 million jobs have been lost since that passed.
This stimulus has only lead to more broken promises. There was suppose to be an immediate boost to the economy that we are still waiting to have happen and administration officials have spent most of their time downplaying expectations for the stimulus. This promise for more immediate jobs will just be another broken promise to add to the steadily growing pile of them.
