Conservatives know to watch the Obama administration and Congress like a hawk because they like to conceal policies and laws in obscure language and with covert dealings. This type of manipulation is presently at work in regards to the “Fairness Doctrine”. The Fairness Doctrine required that equal time be given on the radio to opposing views. The Doctrine was done away with in 1987. The government has figured out that we know what they are planning when it comes to conservative and Christian radio broadcasting, so they have begun the task of changing language and tactics. The FCC recently renewed the charter of a board that was formed that considers itself a diversity committee for communications. They held a meeting yesterday. And the FCC is in on this.
I took a little trek over to the fcc.gov website and found this description for the 31 member board, “The mission of the Advisory Committee on Diversity for Communications in the Digital Age is to make recommendations to the FCC regarding policies and practices that will further enhance the ability of minorities and women to participate in telecommunications and related industries.” What this means is that they will make sure that minorities get to run these stations and that there will be requirements on the type of programming being run. You can bet that these minority owners will be hand picked individuals. I wonder if I could fool them and get my own station? Who would ever think that a gay woman would allow conservative programming? I could start my own covert operation. Groups that comprise this board are leaders from groups like the National Urban League, the Asian American Justice Center and One World Economy.
There are several troubling aspects to this new tactic that everyone should be aware of and they pertain to the FCC and licensing. First, they are attempting to change the number of years that a radio license is in effect. Currently, a radio license is good for eight years. They want to change it to two years. The FCC board will soon have a four Democrat, three Republican make-up as well, giving the liberals the advantage.
There is a real possibility that public airwaves may no longer carry Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck as radio owners are forced to employ more localized programming and more liberal programming which will force many owners out because liberal programming is proven to receive poor ratings. I believe that these tactics will be used against the internet and possibly satellite radio as well. We have already seen that XM and Sirrus had to merge for financial viability and almost claimed bankrupcy. The government could force bankrupcy and take over the satellite radio industry. They have done it with the auto industry.
The FCC website has the following contact information: Letters to the Committee’s Designated Federal Officer (DFO), Barbara Kreisman, should be sent to Room 7C-753, Federal Communications Commission, 445 Twelfth Street, SW, Washington, DC 20554. She also can be contacted by email at DiversityFAC@fcc.gov. Right now this seems to be our option until a new law is crafted. There is a petition that you can sign from the Media Research Center here.
