Just When I Thought The Republicans Got It

Kimberley Strussel has written an article in the Wall Street Journal this last week that has taken the wind out of my sails when it comes to cheering the efforts of the House Republicans to get Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to vote on energy issues.  That is because Strussel reveals that the Senate Republicans have undermined their fellow Republicans’ efforts.  They have also thrown away the chance for Republicans to capitalize on the energy issue which Democrats are extraordinarily weak on.  Do Lindsay Graham, John Thune, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Corker and Johnny Isakson (the five Republican traitors) think that compromising and giving in to the Democrats will help win Republican seats?  For conservatives like me, it only drives us further away.

The Republicans have agreed to more regulation and hurdles to offshore drilling and drilling in general.  I agree that state’s rights are of the utmost importance, but placing restrictions on the those states when it comes to drilling is schizophrenic.  It’s like saying, “We want states to decide if they want to drill for oil, but you can’t drill within 50 miles of the coast (so Alaska, no ANWR) and only four coastal states can drill.”  The core of this new bill is to finance alternative energies by raising taxes on the oil companies.  Now that is such a great idea – especially for those of us that love capitalism and hate Marxism.  Obama quickly praised this effort which is all I need to hear to know that this idea sucks.
