It was only a matter of time before Barack Obama finally said something that would be his undoing rather than just the people he surrounds himself with including his wife. Obama was at a gathering in San Francisco among his peers – rich, elitist liberals – and so probably thought he could speak more freely and openly about his true feelings. As someone with conservative values, I find myself enraged by this little side comment of his because it cuts to the core of what makes this country great and the values established in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It cuts to the core of this nation – a core that Obama claims to care the most about, America’s working class.
Here is the comment in its entirety, “You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administratio and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are going to regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Let me paraphrase this as, “You small town whities are a bunch of bitter, gun-toting, racist Christians.” When Obama says religion, I believe I can safely interpret that as Christian since that is the prevailing religion of conservatives. And I thought Obama was against NAFTA, so what exactly does he mean by “anti-trade”? While I can agree that jobs have disappeared like the steel factories and such, I don’t believe that has made small town people bitter. Angry I’m sure, but not bitter. That is why people continue to distrust the government and conservatives are fed up with the GOP. And conservatives have these values of gun rights, freedom of religion, keeping American jobs here along with production not because of frustration, but because those are core American values. Try reading the Constitution sometime, Barack.
